How easy is it to get Malta residency?


Applying for Malta residency depends on which residency program you are intersted in. Malta is offering several residency programs, ranging from 1-year residency to permanent residency.

Specifically, the residency programs available in Malta include:
  • Malta Permanent Residence Programme (MPRP)
    Permanent residency in Malta in return for a one-time investment. Residency valid for life. Available to non-EU nationals. Not leading to Malta citizenship and the the Malta (EU) passport.
  • Malta Global Residence Programme (GRP)
    Renewable 1-year residency for non-EU nationals. Residency valid for 1 year, renewable at a minimum annual expense of about €15,000 plus property rental. Not leading to Malta citizenship and the the Malta (EU) passport.
  • Malta Ordinary Residence (OR)
    Malta residency for EU nationals and citizens of Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Iceland. For applicants who want to live in Malta 183 days per year or longer. Not leading to Malta citizenship and the the Malta (EU) passport.
  • Malta Tax Residence Programme (TRP)
    Malta tax residency for EU citizens who don't spend more than 183 days in any single jurisdiction outside of Malta. No requirement to spend 183 days inside Malta. Tax rate on income brought into Malta is 15%. Not leading to Malta citizenship and the the Malta (EU) passport.
  • Malta Retirement Programme (MRP)
    For retirees, EU and non-EU nationals, who receive a pension that is at least 75% of the applicant’s total annual income. Not leading to Malta citizenship and the the Malta (EU) passport.
  • Malta Nomad Residence Permit (MNRP)
    Renewable 1-year visa for non-EU nationals. Applicants must work with clients located outside of Malta. Not leading to Malta citizenship and the the Malta (EU) passport.
  • Malta Startup Residence Programme (MSRP)
    For startup founders, co-founders, and core employees and families who are of non-EU nationality. Must register their venture in Malta at a minimum EUR 25,000 capital investment. Not leading to Malta citizenship and the the Malta (EU) passport.
Each Malta residency program has it's own application processing times and requirements.

All programs require the applicant to have health insurance and a clean criminal record. None of the Malta residency programs lead to Malta citizenship or the Malta Passport, which is a European Union passport.

Applicants interested in receiving Malta citizenship (the Malta passport) should apply under the Malta citizenship by investment program, which offers Malta citizenship in as little as 12 to 18 months when the 12 months residency option is selected.
