Countries Ineligible for Malta Residency or Citizenship

Malta publishes new list of countries banned from applying for permanent residency or citizenship.

January 25, 2021. Today the Malta Government published a new list of ineligible countries for the Malta Residence and Visa Programme (MRVP).

This new list is expected to be the same for the new Malta Permanent Residence Programme (MPRP) to become effective on March 29, superseding the MRVP program to be discontinued at that time. Read more...

Malta Banned Countries
Persons who either have a nationality from, or have close ties to the countries listed below, are not eligible to apply for Malta permanent residency:

1. Afghanistan
2. North Korea
3. Iran
4. Democratic Republic of Congo
5. Somalia
6. South Sudan
7. Sudan
8. Syria
9. Yemen
10. Venezuela

Similarly, persons with nationalities from, and close ties to the following countries (due to the US Travel Ban) are barred from applying for Malta citizenship:

1. Afghanistan
2. North Korea
3. Iran
4. Congo
5. Somalia
6. South Sudan
7. Sudan
8. Syria
9. Yemen
10. Venezuela

The Malta government reserves the right to update the list of ineligible countries at any time. Please contact us if you have questions about the meaning of "close ties" with a banned country, or if you have any other concerns.

Note to Iranian Applicants:
The following is a list of all programs with which we can assist Iranian applicants. Each program and any available investment options are described on our website at www.global-residency.com.

• Bulgaria (EU): Iranians may apply for the citizenship by investment program.
• Cyprus (EU): Iranians may apply for the residency by investment program.
• Malta (EU): Iranians may apply for the GRP 1-year residency program.
• Greece (EU): Iranians may apply for the residency by investment program, as long as the bank of the seller of the property accepts funds from the applicant.
• Portugal (EU): Iranians may apply for the residency by investment program, as long as the bank of the seller of the property accepts funds from the applicant.
• Antigua & Barbuda (Caribbean): Iranians may apply for the citizenship by investment program if they migrated outside of Iran before the age of majority and/or have maintained permanent residence in another country for a period of not less than ten (10) years and maintain no economic ties to Iran.
• Dominica (Caribbean): Iranians may apply for the citizenship by investment program if they have not lived in Iran for the last ten (10) years, have no substantial assets in Iran, and are not performing and have not performed any business or similar activity, in or with Iran.
• Turkey (not EU): Iranians may apply for the citizenship by investment program.
