CITIZENSHIP AND RESIDENCY BY INVESTMENT BLOG

What is the cost of obtaining Malta citizenship?

The cost of Malta citizenship under the Merit (CBM) framework is no longer defined by a fixed financial investment. Instead, it is centered on a merit-based contribution to Malta's economy, society, or culture, in addition to establishing a genuine link through a residential property purchase or rental.

Applicants are required to demonstrate exceptional merit through significant contributions to the nation in areas such as science, technology, philanthropy, culture/arts, businesss, or entrepreneurship. While there is no mandatory fixed payment to the government, the framework accommodates investment or donation-based proposals that align with Malta’s strategic priorities.

A purchase or rental of residential real estate in Malta indicates commitment and a genuine link with the country. The property must be kept for at least five years.

The merit-based evaluation considers the main applicant and eligible family members, focusing on the overall value the family brings to the Republic of Malta.

In return for these contributions and the establishment of a genuine link, approved applicants can receive Malta citizenship and the Malta (EU) passport. Malta citizenship benefits include the right to travel, live, and work anywhere in the EU, traveling to over 180 destinations visa-free, and free access to high-quality healthcare and schooling. Malta allows dual citizenship, i.e., the right of applicants to keep the passport of their country of origin.

Summary:

How much does it cost to get Malta citizenship? The Malta citizenship by merit framework has shifted away from one-time financial payments toward sustained impact and service. While the framework does not impose a fixed "price tag," applicants must cover the costs associated with securing a personal residence through purchase or lease and provide evidence of impactful contributions to Malta's national interest. A detailed proposal outline must be submitted to the Community Malta Agency for evaluation. Legal fees for processing the application and conducting the due diligence vary depending on the complexity of the merit case and the number of family members included.
