When are government fees and the contribution due?

Typically upon/after approval stage per the agency’s instructions. Your case manager will confirm exact timing and payee details.

Is the €2,000 donation to any charity?

It must be to an approved Maltese organization. We’ll provide options and the acceptance/receipt format required for compliance.

Are these fees per applicant or per family?

The main administrative fee applies to the principal applicant; spouse/minor children are included. Adult dependents have an additional fee (noted in the summary).

Do thresholds change?

They can. Always check the latest official guidance and our site before committing to a lease or purchase.

Can I switch from rental to purchase (or the reverse) later?

Yes—provided you always maintain a qualifying property and meet the five-year minimum commitment. Tell us before making changes.

Does the purchase threshold include taxes and closing costs?

No. Transaction taxes/fees (e.g., notarial, due diligence, and stamp duty as applicable) are separate from the threshold amount.

Can rent be paid annually in advance to meet the threshold?

Annual rent must meet or exceed the minimum; payment schedules follow your lease terms. Ensure the contract and receipts clearly evidence compliance.

Is the government contribution refundable if refused?

Government contributions are generally non-refundable once paid. Some administrative or professional fees may also be non-refundable—see your engagement letter.

What proof is needed for fee payments and donation?

Bank transfer proofs/receipts in the applicant’s name, official receipts from the authority/approved organization, and copies of the lease or purchase agreement.

Can thresholds vary by region or property type?

Requirements are program-level; however, ensure the specific property meets the current threshold and minimum term conditions before signing.

Can fees change mid-process?

Programs can update fees/thresholds. Files in progress may be subject to transition rules—your advisor will outline any effects on your case.

Which payment methods are accepted?

Bank transfers are standard. Card or cash payments are uncommon for these amounts; follow the authority’s instructions exactly.

Are there ongoing costs after approval?

Yes—maintaining a qualifying property, comprehensive health insurance, and usual living/renewal costs. Budget for renewals and document updates.

Can the qualifying property be sublet?

Yes. Property owners may lease their home when not residing in Malta, while renters may sublet after five years with landlord consent.
