Malta Citizenship by Investment - Application
Steps
In this blog post we will take you through each stage of the program.
As a quick reminder, the prestigious
Malta citizenship program is last remaining program of its nature
in Europe, offering applicants the opportunity to receive Malta
citizenship (the EU passport) after only 12 months in residency
status.
1. Initial Consultation
We begin with a
complimentary KYC due diligence check, requiring only your passport
picture page and residential address. If available, a brief CV or
LinkedIn profile would also be helpful at this stage. We offer this
service free of charge, as we believe it's essential to ensure the
applicant is even eligibility before proceeding further as it prevents
unnecessary expenses for our clients. If an applicant doesn't pass
this initial due diligence, it's likely that the Maltese government
would reject their application at a later stage. By conducting this
check upfront, we save our clients from paying legal fees and making
investments for an application that may not succeed.
2. Residency Application
Upon passing the initial due diligence,
we'll prepare an Engagement Letter for your review. This letter
outlines all fees in detail, ensuring complete transparency. Once
you accept, we will issue our invoice, and upon payment, we will
immediately start with the residency application process – the first
stage of the citizenship by investment program. Applicants are required
to rent (or purchase) a personal residence for the duration of the
residency period. We can assist in finding suitable accommodations
based on your location preferences and budget.
3. Biometrics
Appointment
Within 2-3 weeks after application start, you'll
visit Malta for a biometrics appointment, a crucial step in the
process. This visit is more than just a procedural necessity; it's
a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the Maltese lifestyle
and explore the island's unique charm. Take some time to explore
Malta's diverse neighborhoods, from bustling Valletta to serene
Gozo, schedule some property viewings if you're considering a property
investment, and enjoy a mini-vacation on Malta's beautiful beaches.
4. Residency Card Issuance
After your biometrics
appointment, your residency card will be issued within 2-3 weeks,
and we will send it to you by courier if you cannot pick it up in
person. This card, valid for up to 36 months, will grant you visa-free
travel throughout the EU Schengen area, marking a significant milestone
in your journey towards Maltese citizenship.
5. Citizenship
Eligibility Application
This critical step commences immediately
after receiving your residency card and must be completed within
12 months. During this stage the Maltese government conducts its
in-depth due diligence checks.
6. Approval of Eligibility
The Letter of Approval of Eligibility is a significant milestone
in your journey towards Maltese citizenship. This crucial document
is typically received within 10-11 months after submitting your
Citizenship Eligibility Application. This official government letter
confirms that you have met the initial requirements for Maltese
citizenship. Receiving this letter is often a moment of great relief
and excitement for our clients as it represents the culmination
of months of preparation and waiting, and signals that you're on
the final stretch towards obtaining Maltese citizenship.
7. Citizenship Application
This stage begins promptly
after receiving your eligibility approval and involves the final
document submissions on your path to becoming a Maltese citizen.
8. Approval in Principle
Usually received within
12 months of your biometrics appointment. This document marks the
near-final stage of your citizenship application process. At this
point, your investments in Malta are due, including renewing your
property rental (unless you have purchased or wish to switch to
a purchase), making the required contribution to the Malta government,
and donating to a registered Malta philanthropic organization of
your choice, such as a charity, cultural, scientific, sports, or
animal welfare organization. With the Letter of Approval in Principle
and subsequent investments, you're on the verge of becoming a Maltese
citizen.
9. Oath of Allegiance
The Oath of Allegiance
is the final ceremonial yet profoundly significant step in your
journey to Maltese citizenship. This occasion marks the formal transition
from applicant to citizen and typically occurs shortly after receiving
your Letter of Approval in Principle and completing all required
investments.
10. Certificate of Naturalization and EU Passport
The culmination of your journey – this is the moment when
you officially become a citizen of Malta and, by extension, of the
European Union. The Certificate of Naturalization is typically issued
on the same day as your Oath of Allegiance, and your Maltese (EU)
passport, one of the most powerful passports in the world, is available
shortly thereafter. Many clients choose to celebrate this moment
with family or friends and mark the occasion with a special meal
or event in Malta.
Depending on the complexity of your application,
the entire process can take as little as 14-18 months from initial
consultation to receiving your EU passport.
With your Certificate
of Naturalization and EU passport in hand, a world of opportunities
opens up. Whether you're planning to relocate to Malta, explore
business opportunities in the EU, or simply enjoy enhanced global
mobility, your new status as a Maltese and EU citizen provides a
powerful platform for your future endeavors.
Congratulations
on becoming a citizen of Malta and the European Union!
